People who have a nonclinical role supporting people with mental health illnesses such as schizophrenia should have an understanding of the illness. I wrote a previous post of why having that awareness is important. You can read it here. So what’s the best way to get that understanding? There are the options of training whether face-to-face or elearning. Or even just accessing resources to read online, but that can be a challenging learning option. After all there are so much resources to choose from.
What we often want from an online resource is something short, easy to understand, preferably visual and from a credible source. The Royal College of Psychiatrists has a short video which you can access on YouTube here. In less than 3 minutes you will learn basic information about what schizophrenia is and some of it’s main symptoms. The video is put together with a colourful animation in simple language. In my next post I will write about some ideas for using the video to develop group learning activities.
